River, Ridges and an Old Town
Tree Service in Clinton takes in a little of everything East Tennessee has to offer. The city sits on the Clinch River, along a stretch that is now part of Melton Hill Lake, and it is ringed by the long, narrow ridges at the western edge of the Ridge-and-Valley Province. Walden Ridge rises to the northwest. Clinton's elevation is about 824 feet, and it covers just over 12 square miles in Anderson County, where it is the county seat.
The town has deep roots. It was founded in 1801 as Burrville, renamed Clinton in 1809, and grew around industries like Magnet Knitting Mills, which opened in 1906. That history shows in the housing: older homes on the streets near downtown, mid-century neighborhoods on the hills around them, and newer subdivisions farther out.
Who we work for. Clinton has an older population than most of the Knoxville area. Census figures show 23.1% of residents are 65 or older, and 63.0% of homes are owner-occupied. A lot of our calls come from retirees with big trees they've watched for decades, and from adult children looking after a parent's property. We take the time to explain what we see and what we recommend, in plain terms and in writing.
River-bottom trees. Along the river, sycamores, silver maples, river birch and box elders grow fast in deep, damp soil. They make great shade but tend to drop limbs and can develop weak forks. Pruning to reduce long, heavy limbs and removing dead wood helps. A tree with a split or rotting base near the water usually needs to come down.
Ridge-side trees. Up on the ridges, soils are thinner and the trees are mostly oaks, hickories, poplars and pines. Lots are often steep, which affects how a tree can be removed. When there's no safe place to drop a trunk, we take it apart from the top down and lower each piece on ropes. Wood may need to be carried or winched back up to the driveway.
Watch for these: 1. Dead or brown pines, especially after a dry summer, which can signal southern pine beetle 2. Ash with a thinning crown or bark stripped by woodpeckers, an early sign of emerald ash borer 3. Trees that have started leaning after heavy rain 4. Large limbs over the roof with cracks or decay at the base
Around downtown. On the older streets near the courthouse, houses sit closer together and trees often overhang two or three properties at once. Before pruning a tree that spreads over a neighbor's roof or driveway, it helps to let them know. We can schedule the work so both yards are protected and the cleanup covers both sides of the fence.

Clinton Questions
I'm arranging tree work for my parents in Clinton. Can I handle it remotely?
Yes. We can meet your parents or visit on our own, then send you the written estimate and photos of the trees we're concerned about. You can approve the work by phone or email.
Can you remove a tree on a steep lot without damaging the house?
Yes, that's what sectional removal with rigging is for. Each piece is cut and lowered on a rope, so nothing falls freely near the house.
My river birch keeps dropping branches. Should I remove it?
Not necessarily. River birch and other bottomland trees naturally shed small branches. If it's dropping large limbs or the base is rotting, we'll recommend pruning or removal after we look at it.
Do you work on the lake side of town?
Yes. Lake-side work often involves slopes and soft ground, so we plan access and debris handling to keep wood and brush out of the water.
My neighbor's tree hangs over my roof. Can you prune it?
In general you can have limbs trimmed back to your property line, but the work shouldn't harm the tree, and it's best to talk with your neighbor first. We can give you both the same written plan.
