At the Edge of the Plateau
Tree Service in Oliver Springs happens right where two landscapes meet. The town sits on the northwestern edge of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, at the boundary with the Cumberland Plateau. Walden Ridge, which marks that boundary, rises just beyond the hilltops, and the Crab Orchard Mountains, the southern end of the Cumberland Mountains, stand on the plateau just west of town. Oliver Springs is small, about 3,297 people at the 2020 census and under 6 square miles, but it spans parts of three counties: Anderson, Morgan and Roane.
Springs, coal and Oak Ridge
The town was founded in 1821 as Winter's Gap, renamed for its first postmaster, Richard Oliver, and incorporated in 1903. Mineral springs drew visitors for generations, and a 150-room hotel built in 1894 burned in 1905. In the 1890s the town served as a base camp during the Coal Creek War. During World War II, neighboring communities were taken for Oak Ridge, and for decades the local economy leaned heavily on Oak Ridge jobs. Parts of the 1998 film October Sky were shot here.
Two kinds of trees
In the valley around town, yards have the usual East Tennessee mix: oaks, maples, tulip poplars, sycamores along the creeks. Up toward Walden Ridge and the plateau edge, lots are steeper and rockier, with more pines, oaks and hickories on thin soils. Trees on those slopes face more wind and dry out faster in late summer, which makes them more prone to storm damage and to pine beetle attack.
The jobs we see here
1. Dead or dying pines near homes on the hillsides 2. Large yard trees with limbs over roofs 3. Trees down across driveways and roads after storms 4. Clearing for new outbuildings, gardens or views 5. Stump grinding after removals
Working on steep ground
When a tree is on a slope above a house, there's no room for error. We remove those trees from the top down in sections, lowering each piece on a rope so nothing rolls. Getting the wood back up to the road can take extra time, which is figured into the estimate so you know the price up front.
Three counties
Because the town reaches into Anderson, Morgan and Roane counties, your county affects things like who maintains the road out front and where debris can go. Give us your address and we'll plan accordingly. The tree work itself doesn't change.
Hemlocks in the hollows
Shaded, damp hollows near the plateau edge are good hemlock country, and the hemlock woolly adelgid has been killing hemlocks across the southern Appalachians faster than expected. White, cottony tufts on the underside of branches are the sign. A hemlock that still has most of its needles can often be protected with a soil-applied systemic insecticide; one that has gone gray and thin is usually a removal. Dead hemlocks become brittle quickly, so they should come down before they start dropping tops.

Oliver Springs Questions
My house is on the slope toward Walden Ridge. How do you remove trees there?
From the top down, in sections. Each piece is lowered on a rope so nothing rolls toward the house. The estimate includes the extra time to get wood back up to the road.
Does my county matter?
For the tree work, no. For road maintenance and debris disposal, it can, since Oliver Springs spans three counties. Give us your address when you call.
Why are the pines on my hillside dying?
Pines on thin, dry ridge soils are often stressed in hot summers and can be attacked by southern pine beetles. Look for pitch tubes on the bark and browning needles, and call for a look.
Can you clear trees to open a view?
Yes. Selective thinning and removal can open a view while keeping the healthiest trees. We'll mark the trees with you before any cutting.
