Mossy Creek's Trees Today
Tree Service in Jefferson City serves a town with a younger, more mobile population than most around Knoxville. Jefferson City is home to Carson-Newman University, founded in 1851, with over 2,500 students next to downtown. Census figures show only 51.1% of homes are owner-occupied and just 12.8% of residents are 65 or older. That means many of our calls come from landlords and property managers, as well as from longtime homeowners.
Mossy Creek and the lake
Adam and Elizabeth Peck settled here in 1788 after following the Holston River down from Virginia. The settlement was called Mossy Creek, possibly for the vivid green moss along the creek, and the Battle of Mossy Creek was fought here on December 19, 1863. Mossy Creek merged with two nearby communities and incorporated as Jefferson City in 1901. In 1940 the TVA began buying land for Cherokee Dam, and today the city's northwestern boundary touches the southernmost arm of Cherokee Lake, a reservoir on the Holston River.
Working for landlords
Rental houses tend to have trees nobody has looked at in years. When a tenant calls about a dead limb over the roof, the landlord needs a quick, clear answer. We can:
- Look at the trees with or without the owner present
- Send a written estimate and photos to the owner or manager
- Schedule the work around tenants
- Leave the yard clean and the tenant informed
If you manage several properties, we can look at all of them and give separate estimates.
Lakeside lots
Homes near Cherokee Lake often have trees leaning toward the water and roots on sloping, sometimes eroding banks. Shoreline trees are valuable for shade and bank stability, so we try to prune rather than remove them. Land right along a TVA reservoir may belong to TVA, which has its own rules, so check before cutting near the water.
Elevation and exposure
Jefferson City sits higher than Knoxville, at about 1,161 feet, in northern Jefferson County between New Market, Dandridge and Morristown. Trees on exposed ground take more wind in storms. After a strong storm, walk your property and look for hanging limbs, cracked trunks and trees that have shifted. Hanging limbs can fall days later without warning.
Common jobs around town
1. Dead limbs and trees over rental houses 2. Clearing trees from roofs, gutters and driveways 3. Removing storm-damaged trees 4. Pruning shoreline trees near Cherokee Lake 5. Grinding stumps for a mowable yard
Older streets near the college
The streets around Carson-Newman and the old downtown have some of the oldest trees in town. Big oaks and maples there often have limbs over sidewalks, porches and parked cars. Regular deadwood removal and clearance pruning keep those trees safer without changing the character of the street.

Jefferson City Questions
I'm a tenant and a tree limb is hanging over my house. Can I call you?
Yes, you can call us to describe the problem, and we can look at it. The property owner needs to approve and usually pays for the work, so we'll send the written estimate to them.
Can you look at trees at several rental properties?
Yes. We can visit each property and send separate estimates, so you can prioritize the most urgent work.
Can I cut the trees on my Cherokee Lake shoreline?
Trees on your own land are generally yours, but the strip right along the water may be TVA land with its own rules. Check with TVA before cutting near the shore.
Do you work out toward New Market and Dandridge?
Yes. We serve Jefferson City and the surrounding area of Jefferson County.
Can you work around student move-in or a tenant's schedule?
Yes. Tell us when the house is occupied or when tenants are moving, and we'll schedule around it. We let tenants know when we're coming and what we'll be doing.
