Tree Work in a City Built Into the Woods

Tree Service in Oak Ridge has a particular feel, because the city was dropped into a forest almost overnight. It was established in 1942 as a production site for the Manhattan Project, and housing went up quickly along Black Oak Ridge, which gave the city its name. Many early homes were prefabricated, and many were built from cemesto panels. Builders left a lot of the existing woods in place, so a typical older Oak Ridge home sits on a sloped lot with tall hardwoods and pines close on every side.

What the older neighborhoods need now. The trees around those 1940s and 1950s houses are now very large, and many of the pines and short-lived hardwoods are at the end of their lives. We see a lot of:

  • Dead or declining pines close to the house
  • Oaks and poplars with heavy limbs reaching over roofs
  • Trees on the downhill side of a driveway that have started to lean
  • Roots lifting old walks and retaining walls

A note on old cemesto homes. Cemesto panels were a bonded cement and asbestos material. If a tree or limb has damaged the siding or roof of an older home, don't break up or remove the damaged material yourself. Have a qualified contractor look at it. We can remove the tree and limbs without disturbing the structure further.

Big city, lots of land. Oak Ridge covers almost 90 square miles, about 85 of it land, across Anderson and Roane counties. The Clinch River wraps around much of the city, and Melton Hill Lake, formed when its dam was finished in 1963, borders it to the northeast and east. That means everything from tight ridge-top streets to wooded lots with long, steep driveways. For removals on a hillside, we usually take trees down in sections and plan how to get the wood back up to the road. On lake-side lots, we work with the slope and avoid dropping debris into the water.

New owners inheriting old trees. Census figures show that 80.3% of Oak Ridge residents lived in the same house a year earlier, a lower share than in most nearby towns. With a steady flow of new buyers, we often meet people who have just moved in and want to know which of the twenty trees around the house deserve attention first. A walk-through is a good way to start: we point out dead wood, defects and trees that lean toward the house, and rank them so you can plan.

What to watch for here. On pine-heavy lots, look for pitch tubes on the bark and needles turning red, signs of southern pine beetle. In ash trees, look for thinning crowns and woodpecker damage that strips the bark. And after any heavy wet snow, walk the property: bent saplings and cracked leaders in the understory are easy to miss until they fall.

Oak Ridge Background

  • Founded in 1942. Oak Ridge was established in 1942 as a Manhattan Project production site, incorporated in 1959, and named for Black Oak Ridge, along which it was built.
  • Cemesto houses. Many early homes were prefabricated, and many were built of cemesto panels, a bonded cement and asbestos material, so storm damage to old siding needs careful handling.
  • Lake and river edges. The Clinch River forms a half-rectangle around the city, and Melton Hill Lake, completed on May 1, 1963, borders it to the northeast and east, with about 193 miles of shoreline.
  • Spring brush pickup. Oak Ridge runs a seasonal brush pickup; in 2023 it ran May 8 to June 30, limbs had to be 3 inches or less in diameter with cut ends toward the street, and each home was limited to one pickup-truck load, about 100 cubic feet.

Oak Ridge Questions

We just bought an older house in Oak Ridge surrounded by trees. Where do we start?

Start with a walk-through. We look for dead trees, cracked or decayed trunks and trees leaning toward the house, then give you a written list of what needs attention now and what can wait.

Can you remove a tree on the downhill side of a steep driveway?

Yes. These are usually taken down in sections with rigging, so no piece rolls downhill. The quote explains how the wood will be brought up and whether we leave it, split it or haul it away.

A limb damaged the siding on my cemesto house. Can you clean it up?

We can remove the tree and the limb, but we won't break up or haul damaged cemesto, because it may contain asbestos. Call a qualified contractor for that part.

Do you work in the Roane County part of Oak Ridge too?

Yes. We cover the whole city, on both the Anderson County and Roane County sides.
