A Town Designed Around the Woods

Tree Service in Norris is different from tree work almost anywhere else around Knoxville, because the town was designed to sit inside the trees. The Tennessee Valley Authority built Norris in 1933 as a model planned community for the workers building Norris Dam on the Clinch River. Its winding roads follow the terrain, some houses don't face the street at all, and a central green and a belt of rural land were set aside for residents. Norris is often described as the first self-contained town in the U.S. built on greenbelt principles.

That design means wooded lots, curving lanes and houses tucked into slopes, with trees close on all sides. It also means tree work here has to be careful and quiet. There's often no straight shot from the road to the back of a lot, and the yards blend into shared green space.

The original houses

The TVA built twelve basic house designs in Norris, each with a porch and fireplace, using local wood and stone. Several were among the first all-electric homes. Those houses are now more than ninety years old. Big trees beside old stone chimneys, slate or shingle roofs and porch posts are common, and a falling limb can do real damage to features that are hard to replace. Around these homes, we:

  • Take trees down in small sections when they stand over a roof or chimney
  • Lower limbs with ropes rather than letting them drop
  • Use ground protection on soft lawns and paths
  • Keep equipment off stone walls, walkways and old foundations

The watershed next door

The Norris Municipal Watershed covers more than 2,200 acres and is managed for water supply, recreation, timber and wildlife, with nearly 20 miles of trails. Many properties back onto forest. That's wonderful for shade and privacy, but it also means dead trees on the edge of the woods can threaten a house, a shed or a car. If a dead tree is on town or watershed land, contact the city before any work.

An older community

Norris had 1,599 residents in 2020, with a median age of 52.1. Many homeowners have lived here for years and want trees cared for, not cleared. We usually recommend the lightest work that solves the problem: removing dead wood, clearing roofs, and taking out only trees that are failing or dangerous.

Common concerns in Norris

  • Old hemlocks in shaded hollows showing the white, cottony egg sacs of hemlock woolly adelgid
  • Pines browning after dry summers
  • Tall oaks and poplars leaning toward houses on slopes
  • Fallen trees across private lanes and driveways after storms

Wood, chips and the garden-town look

Many Norris residents prefer to keep the wood and chips on the property for paths, beds and woodland edges, which fits the town's natural look. We can leave chips in a pile where you want them or spread them on paths, and cut logs to firewood length or leave larger rounds as natural borders.

Norris Questions

A dead tree on the watershed land is leaning toward my house. Can you cut it?

Not without permission. If the tree is on city or watershed land, contact the City of Norris first. Once the owner agrees, we can remove it safely.

How do you work on lots that don't face the street?

We plan the route in before the job, often carrying gear and wood by hand along paths, and use ropes to lower pieces instead of dropping them.

Can you protect the stone chimney on my old Norris house?

Yes. Trees near chimneys are taken down in small sections and lowered with ropes, so nothing lands on the stonework.

Do you remove only what's necessary?

Yes. In a town like Norris, we usually recommend the lightest work that fixes the problem, and we explain each recommendation in writing.
