Between the Highway and the Holston

Tree Service in Mascot means working on country property in the northeast corner of Knox County. Mascot is a census-designated place of about 2,760 people (2020), sitting between U.S. Route 11W and the Holston River, roughly 14 miles northeast of Knoxville and 4 miles west of Strawberry Plains. Grainger and Jefferson counties are just across the line. It's a mix of homes on larger lots, older houses along the road and woods running down toward the river.

A mining town's past

Mascot's history is tied to zinc. John Erwin bought 150 acres here around 1796, and early settlement may have centered on a Holston River ford called Saylor's Ford. The railroad arrived in 1884. In 1906 the Holston Zinc Company opened a mine, and Mascot became the center of zinc mining in Knox and Grainger counties. Old industrial ground and rail corridors often have a different mix of trees than farmland: fast-growing volunteers like box elder, black locust, tree of heaven and Virginia pine that come up wherever ground was disturbed.

What those volunteer trees mean

Volunteer trees grow fast, but many are short-lived and brittle. Tree of heaven is an invasive species that spreads by root sprouts, so cutting one down often produces a dozen more unless the stump and roots are treated. Black locust is strong but thorny and suckers. Box elders split easily. On Mascot properties we often:

  • Remove volunteer trees crowding houses, sheds and fences
  • Clear fence lines and field edges
  • Grind stumps to slow resprouting
  • Advise on follow-up for species that resprout from roots

River-side ground

Closer to the Holston, soils are deeper and damper and the trees bigger: sycamores, silver maples, river birch, cottonwoods. Those trees are beautiful but tend to drop limbs, and they can be undercut by high water. If you have trees along the river or a creek, check them after floods for exposed roots and new leans.

Larger lots, more choices

With more room, we can often fell trees whole instead of piece by piece. That's usually faster and cheaper. We still plan every drop around buildings, fences, wells and septic systems, and we tell you in the estimate which method we'll use.

After a storm

Rural roads and long driveways often get blocked when trees fall. If a tree is across your drive, we can open it up quickly and come back for full cleanup. If a tree is touching a power line, stay back and call the utility first.

Wood and brush

Many Mascot owners like to keep firewood or chips. We can cut, stack and leave wood, chip brush for mulch, or haul everything off. It's your choice, written into the estimate.

Trees and old ground

On land that was mined, quarried or used by the railroad, soils can be thin, compacted or full of fill. Trees on that kind of ground often have shallow, spreading roots and may not be as well anchored as they look. If a large tree near your house grew up on old disturbed ground, it's worth having its base and root flare checked, especially after a wet spell.

Mascot Questions

I cut down a tree of heaven and now there are sprouts everywhere. What happened?

Tree of heaven spreads by root sprouts, so cutting the trunk often triggers more. Grinding the stump helps, and follow-up treatment of the sprouts is usually needed to get ahead of it.

Can you open up my driveway after a storm?

Yes. We can cut the tree off the drive first so you can get in and out, then return for the full cleanup and stump work.

Do you work near the Holston River?

Yes. We work on river-side properties and plan around soft ground and slopes, keeping wood and brush out of the water.

Will you fell a tree whole on my larger lot?

If there's a safe drop zone, yes. It's often faster and less expensive. If not, we'll take it down in sections.
