On the Banks of the Holston
Tree Service in Strawberry Plains starts with the river. The community sits on the bank of the Holston River at about 928 feet, at the point where Jefferson, Knox and Sevier counties meet. It's unincorporated, and the census-designated place, which covers only the Jefferson County side, had 2,405 residents in 2020 across about 4.2 square miles. U.S. 11E (Andrew Johnson Highway) runs through, Interstate 40 crosses the southwestern part, and Old Dandridge Pike (SR 139) is a main local road.
A bridge with a story
In 1861, the railroad bridge over the Holston here was one of the targets of a Union-sympathizer plot to burn East Tennessee's bridges. It survived that attempt, only to be destroyed in 1864 in an artillery duel between Confederate and Union forces. River crossings like this one shaped where people settled, and the oldest homes and trees tend to be close to the river and the old roads.
River-bank trees
The Holston's banks support some of the biggest trees in the area: sycamores, silver maples, cottonwoods, box elders and river birch. They grow fast in deep, damp soil, and many are now very large. They also bring typical river-tree problems:
- Brittle wood and frequent limb drop
- Long, heavy limbs reaching toward the light over the water
- Roots undercut by floods and bank erosion
- Rot at the base of older trees
We prune these trees to take weight off long limbs and remove deadwood. When a river tree is undercut, split or rotting at the base, removal is usually the safer call.
Highway and roadside trees
With I-40 and 11E running through, many properties front busy roads. Trees on your side of the line that lean over the road should be kept trimmed back and checked after storms. If a tree is in the road right-of-way, contact the agency that maintains that road.
Three counties, one community
Strawberry Plains spans Jefferson, Knox and Sevier counties. That matters for road maintenance, debris disposal and who to call about a public tree, but it doesn't change how we do the work. Give us your address and we'll take care of the rest.
Country lots
Away from the river, Strawberry Plains has larger rural lots with woods, fields and fencerows. On those properties we often: 1. Remove dead trees near homes, barns and driveways 2. Clear volunteer trees from fence lines 3. Cut up and clear storm-downed trees 4. Grind stumps in yards and pastures When there's room, we can fell trees whole, which is faster and usually costs less.
After a flood
When the Holston runs high, it can leave debris piled against trunks, scour soil from roots and tilt trees on the bank. Once the water drops, walk the bank and look for new leans, exposed roots and cracks at the base. Those trees are much more likely to fail in the next windstorm.

Strawberry Plains Questions
Can you remove a tree on the Holston River bank?
Yes. River-bank removals often involve soft, sloping ground, so we may do more by hand and with ropes. We keep wood and brush out of the river.
Which county am I in, and does it matter?
Strawberry Plains spans Jefferson, Knox and Sevier counties. It matters for road maintenance and debris disposal, but not for the tree work itself.
Do you handle trees near I-40?
We handle trees on your property, including those near the highway. For trees in the highway right-of-way, contact the agency that maintains the road.
Can you clear several storm-downed trees at once?
Yes. We can open up driveways first, then cut up and clear the rest. The estimate covers the full cleanup and any stump work.
When should river trees be pruned?
Late fall through winter is a good time for most species, when they're dormant and the structure is easy to see. Dead or hanging limbs over homes and roads should come down whenever they're found.
