What Happens to the Stump

Stump grinding is the fast, practical way to get rid of what is left after a tree comes down. A grinder chews the stump into wood chips a few inches below the soil line, along with the thickest surface roots near it. The rest of the root system stays in the ground and rots away over time. Pulling a whole stump with an excavator is rarely worth the torn-up yard, and chemical stump removers can take a year or more.

Why stumps are worth grinding here

A stump in a Knoxville yard is not just a mowing obstacle. Some species, such as Bradford pear, tree-of-heaven and many maples, sprout from the stump and roots, so a tree you paid to remove can come back as a thicket. Decaying stumps also attract wood-boring insects and termites, and in the clay soils common across the valley a rotting stump can leave a soft spot that settles. If the old tree died of a disease, removing the stump also takes away some of the infected wood.

Depth and what goes back

For lawns, a stump is usually ground about 4 to 6 inches below grade. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot, set a fence post or lay pavers, tell us at the estimate so we can go deeper or wider. Grindings are a mix of wood chips and soil. They can be raked back into the hole and topped with soil and seed, used as mulch elsewhere, or hauled away.

Slopes, rock and tight spots

Knoxville yards add a few complications. On a steep bank, the grinder has to be set where it will not slide, and sometimes a smaller machine is the only one that will fit through a gate. The valley's limestone and dolomite bedrock means rock and chert are sometimes buried just under a stump, which slows grinding and wears teeth. Underground utilities are another concern: the grinder goes below the surface, so lines should be located before work begins. Tennessee 811 is the free call-before-you-dig service, and we ask for locates when a stump sits near where lines might run.

Grinding old stumps

We also grind stumps left from storms or earlier removals. Old stumps that are partly rotted are often quicker to grind, while stumps from oaks and other dense hardwoods take longer. Multiple stumps on the same visit are usually priced lower per stump.

Stump Grinding Questions

How much does stump grinding cost in Knoxville?

HomeGuide puts the first stump at about $120 to $400 and each additional stump at $30 to $60, with very large stumps $300 to $800. Diameter, species, rock and access matter most. We quote each stump in writing.

How deep do you grind a stump?

Usually about 4 to 6 inches below the surface for lawn. If you want to replant or build in the same spot, we can go deeper; tell us at the estimate.

Will the roots grow back after stump grinding?

Most trees will not regrow once the stump is ground. Some species, like Bradford pear and tree-of-heaven, can send up sprouts from roots for a while; cutting them back as they appear usually finishes them off.

What do I do with the hole?

Grindings can be raked back in and covered with topsoil and seed. They settle as they decay, so a little extra soil later may be needed. We can haul grindings away if you would rather start with clean fill.

Do you grind stumps left by another company?

Yes. Old stumps from storms, earlier removals or a previous owner are a regular part of the job.
