When a Storm Puts a Tree Where It Should Not Be

Emergency storm tree service covers the calls nobody plans for: a tulip poplar across the roof after a July thunderstorm, an oak limb through a car windshield, a pear split down the middle by ice, a driveway blocked by a pine. In Knoxville, storms usually hit when the ground is wet. The city averages close to 52 inches of rain a year and July is the wettest month, so summer storms often come when soil is soft and the canopy is heavy with leaves, which is when roots let go and whole trees tip over.

What to do first

  • Get everyone out of any room a tree has come into, and stay out of the drop zone under hanging limbs.
  • Stay far away from any downed or sagging wire, and anything a wire touches. Call the utility (KUB inside the city) to report it, and 911 if anyone is in danger.
  • Take photos of the tree and the damage from several angles before anything is moved; your insurance company will want them.
  • Call your insurer to start the claim, then call us at (865) 401-8827 with the address and a description or photos.

How storm work is handled

Storm jobs are triaged by danger, not by order of calls. A tree resting on a roof, a limb hanging over a door or a tree blocking the only way out of a property comes ahead of a tree lying in the back yard. On a roof, the tree is not simply pulled off: that can tear open more of the roof. Weight is taken off in pieces, often with ropes tied higher in the tree or with a lift or crane, so the load comes off in a controlled way. Once the structure is clear, the rest of the tree is cut up and the area is cleaned, and if a roof is open we can help cover the gap with a tarp until the roofer arrives.

Ice and snow

Knoxville does not get much snow in a normal year, about 4.6 inches a season, but it does get storms that break trees. The 1993 Storm of the Century left 15 inches on the city, and a January 2026 winter storm brought freezing rain across Tennessee and left more than 250,000 customers in the state without power. Ice adds enormous weight to every twig. Bradford pears, tulip poplars and trees with tight V-shaped forks are the ones most likely to split.

Hangers and cracked trees

Not every storm problem is on the ground. A broken limb lodged in the crown, often called a hanger, can fall days later. A trunk can crack partway and stay standing. A tree can lean a little more after a storm, with soil lifted on the far side. These are worth having looked at soon, before the next storm finishes the job.

Emergency Storm Tree Service Questions

Does homeowners insurance pay for storm tree removal?

Often, when a tree falls on a covered structure like the house or a garage, removal is part of the claim, usually up to a set limit. A tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything is often not covered. Check your policy and call your insurer early.

Can I call at night or on a weekend?

Yes. You can call any time and leave the details. We return calls as soon as we can and schedule storm work by how dangerous each situation is.

A tree fell on a power line in my yard. Can you remove it?

Not until the utility has made the line safe. Stay away from the tree and the wire and report it to KUB at (865) 524-2911, or to your own electric provider outside KUB territory. If the tree pulled down only the service line to your house, KUB treats clearing the tree as the owner's job and needs damaged service equipment repaired before reconnecting, so call us once the line is de-energized.

My neighbor's tree fell on my house. Whose insurance pays?

Usually your own homeowners policy handles damage to your house, even when the tree was your neighbor's, unless the tree was obviously dead or neglected beforehand. Talk to your insurer; we provide an itemized invoice either way.

Should I cut up a fallen tree myself?

Small limbs on the ground, maybe. Trees under tension, on a structure or tangled with wires are dangerous to cut, because wood can spring back or shift without warning. Leave those to a crew with the rigging to handle them.
