From Spring Resort to Shaded Neighborhood
Tree Service in Fountain City is often about very old trees on very established streets. Fountain City is a neighborhood in North Knoxville, set in a valley hemmed in by ridges: Black Oak Ridge and Beaver Ridge to the north, separating it from Halls Crossroads, and Sharp's Ridge to the south, separating it from the rest of North Knoxville. First Creek drains the valley south toward downtown. Broadway (U.S. 441) runs through the heart of it.
A long history
Settlement here began around 1791 with Fort Adair. In the 1820s a Methodist campground grew up beside a big spring, and revivals drew up to 2,000 people. In 1886 the three-story Fountain Head Hotel opened above the spring. By 1890 the community had taken the name Fountain City, the heart-shaped Fountain City Lake was finished, and a "Dummy Line" railroad connected it to Knoxville. Fountain City Park now covers 12 acres around the spring that feeds First Creek, and the lake, known as the Duck Pond, is still the neighborhood's best-known spot.
Fountain City stayed independent for a long time. By the 1950s it had over 30,000 residents and was reportedly the largest unincorporated community in the U.S. Knoxville annexed it in 1962 after a long fight.
What that means for trees
A neighborhood with that much history has a deep canopy: big oaks, maples, tulip poplars, sycamores along First Creek, and old ornamental trees in front yards. Many homes date from the early and middle 20th century, and their trees are now huge. Typical requests:
- Pruning large limbs off roofs and away from chimneys
- Removing trees that have hollowed out or lost much of their crown
- Clearing branches from service drops and the street side of the yard
- Grinding stumps in small front yards where a tree once stood
City rules and street trees
Because Fountain City has been part of Knoxville since 1962, city rules apply. If a tree stands in the strip between the sidewalk and the street, check with the City of Knoxville before work, since trees in the public right-of-way may be the city's responsibility. Trees on your own lot are yours to manage.
Ridge-side yards
Homes on the slopes of Sharp's Ridge and Black Oak Ridge have steep yards and trees uphill of the house. These trees deserve regular checks, because a failure on a slope sends the tree downhill. Sectional removal with rigging is often the safest way to take them down.
Snow and ice on big trees
Knoxville doesn't get much snow most years, but big storms do happen: the 1993 Storm of the Century brought about 15 inches. Heavy, wet snow and ice on large trees with long limbs causes most of the winter damage we see. Removing deadwood and reducing long, heavy limbs before winter helps.

Fountain City Questions
Is Fountain City part of Knoxville for tree rules?
Yes. It has been part of the City of Knoxville since 1962, so city rules apply, including for trees in the public right-of-way.
My old oak has a hollow trunk. Is it safe?
It depends on how much sound wood is left around the hollow. Some hollow trees stand for decades; others are close to failing. We'll look at it and tell you honestly.
Can you remove a tree in a small front yard without damaging the sidewalk?
Yes. We take it down in small pieces and lower them onto mats. Stump grinding near sidewalks is done carefully to avoid damage.
Do you work on the ridge streets?
Yes. We work all over Fountain City, including the steep streets on Sharp's Ridge and Black Oak Ridge.
Can you help with the sycamores along First Creek?
Yes. Creek-side sycamores grow very large and often drop limbs. Thinning, deadwood removal and reducing long limbs over yards and roofs are common jobs. If a tree is on public park land, contact the city instead.
