Small City, Big Trees

Tree Service in Rockford is usually for homeowners with more yard than most. Rockford is a small city in northern Blount County, about 3.2 square miles with 822 residents at the 2020 census. It became a city around 1970, largely so it wouldn't be annexed by Alcoa or Maryville, and it still has a quieter, more rural feel than its neighbors. Lots are bigger, trees are older and the Little River runs right through town.

Named for a river crossing

In the early 1800s, travelers between Knoxville and Maryville crossed the Little River at a rocky ford here, and the place was known as Rocky Ford. Later, the Rockford Manufacturing Company built a factory beside the river, with a low-head dam to power it. That dam still stands and has been the site of many drownings. If you're on the river side of town, keep well clear of it.

Trees along the Little River

The Little River rises in Great Smoky Mountains National Park at about 5,100 feet and flows 60 miles before joining the Tennessee River at Fort Loudoun Lake. By the time it reaches Rockford, it has passed Townsend, Walland, Maryville and Alcoa. Its record flow was 50,000 cubic feet per second, in April 1875. A river like that carves banks and deposits rich, damp soil, and the trees that grow along it, such as sycamores, silver maples and box elders, grow fast and shed limbs easily. River-bank trees can also be undercut by high water. If a tree near the water has started to lean or the bank has fallen away from its roots, have it looked at.

Larger lots, different jobs

On Rockford's bigger properties, we often handle things that small in-town lots never need:

  • Removing several dead or declining trees at once
  • Clearing fence lines and pasture edges of volunteer trees
  • Thinning and raising trees along long driveways
  • Cleaning up after storms that drop multiple trees
  • Grinding stumps in areas you want to mow

When there's room, we can fell trees whole instead of taking them down piece by piece, which is often faster and less expensive. The written estimate will say which method we plan to use and why.

Brush and wood

On larger lots, many owners prefer to keep the wood for firewood or leave chips for mulch in garden beds and paths. Tell us what you'd like. The estimate spells it out so there's no confusion on the day of the job.

Next to two bigger cities

Rockford is wedged between Alcoa and Maryville, and the change from in-town lots to country properties happens fast along Williams Mill Road and the roads off it. Trees along those roadsides often lean over the pavement toward the light. If a tree on your land overhangs the road, keeping the limbs raised clear of trucks and school buses is a good idea before a storm or a snow load brings them down.

Stump Grinding in Knoxville, TN

Rockford Questions

Can you remove several trees on my Rockford property in one visit?

Yes. We often handle multiple removals, pruning and stump grinding in one visit on larger lots. The estimate lists each tree and the total.

A tree on the riverbank is leaning toward the water. Is that a problem?

It may be. If high water has undercut the roots, the tree can fall into the river or toward your yard. We'll look at the bank and the roots and tell you whether to prune, remove or leave it.

Can I keep the wood for firewood?

Yes. We can cut it to firewood length and stack it where you want, or haul it away. Just tell us when you get the estimate.

Do you clear fence lines?

Yes. We remove volunteer trees and brush along fences and can grind stumps so the line can be maintained.

How close to the river can you work?

We can work right up to the bank, but soft or eroding ground limits where equipment can go. On riverbank trees we often do more by hand and with ropes, and we keep brush and wood out of the water.
