Tree Care in a Quiet Quaker Town

Tree Service in Friendsville is country work at a small-town pace. Friendsville is a city of about 896 people (2020) in western Blount County, covering under 3 square miles. Quakers from New Garden, North Carolina, settled it in the 1790s, and the town takes its name from their Friends Church; the Friends Meetinghouse still stands. Friendsville was incorporated in 1953. Its main road, State Route 333 (Miser Station Road), runs from Fort Loudoun Lake in the north down to U.S. 321.

The town also has a notable place in history. In 1854, British Quaker elders traveling to promote abolition stayed here, and William Forster died and was buried in Friendsville. The town was a stop on the Underground Railroad. A place with that much history usually has some very old trees, around churchyards, old homesites and along the older roads, and those trees need care that respects their age.

Older owners, larger lots

Friendsville's median age was 48.0 in 2020, older than most of the county. Many owners have farmed or lived on the same ground for decades. Lots tend to be larger than in Maryville or Alcoa, with yard trees close to the house and woods or fields behind. The calls we get here are a mix:

1. Big oaks, maples or poplars with dead limbs over the roof 2. Dead trees along a driveway or fencerow 3. Trees down across a drive or fence after a storm 4. Volunteer trees and brush crowding a field edge or outbuilding 5. Stumps left from old removals that make mowing a chore

Old trees deserve a light touch

The instinct with a big old tree is often to cut it back hard. That usually backfires. Heavy cuts leave large wounds that let in decay, and a tree that's been topped sends up a thicket of weak sprouts. With mature trees, we take out what's dead, broken or dangerous, shorten a few problem limbs back to strong side branches, and leave the rest. If a tree is truly failing, we'll say so and explain why.

When there's room to work

On open country lots, there's often enough space to fell a tree whole, which saves time and money compared with taking it down in pieces. We check the lean, the wind and what's around it, and pick a safe drop line. Where a tree is close to a house, barn or power line, we rig and lower it in sections.

Wood you can use

If you heat with wood or want firewood for the fire pit, we can cut the trunk into stove-length rounds and stack them. Chips make good mulch for gardens and paths. Or we can haul it all away. The estimate says exactly which.

Friendsville Questions

Can you take down a tree near my barn without hitting it?

Yes. If there isn't a safe drop line, we take the tree down in sections and lower the pieces with ropes, so nothing lands on the barn or fence.

Will you cut my wood into firewood?

Yes. We can cut it to stove length and stack it where you want. Splitting can be added if you ask. The estimate lists what's included.

Is it worth saving a very old oak?

Often it is. Old oaks can live a long time with the right care. If the trunk and roots are sound, removing dead wood and lightening a few limbs is usually better than removal.

Do you clear fencerows and field edges?

Yes. We remove volunteer trees and brush and can grind stumps so the edge stays easy to maintain.

Do you come out to Friendsville for small jobs?

Yes. A single dead limb over the roof or one stump in the yard is worth a call. If you have a few small items, we can combine them into one visit and one estimate.
